I have said it before, and I will say it again: I love to read a good book. I especially like books that are entertaining and thought provoking.
I just finished reading a new Franciscan Media book titled Stories of Jesus, 40 Days of Prayer and Reflection by Joseph F. Girzone. Although Stories of Jesus is designed to be read as a daily time for a “retreat with Jesus” I could not put the book down after reading only one story.
The thing is I know these stories. I grew up with them and have often retold them to my children. Girzone retells these stories in a way that makes them fresh. He gives us the Gospel message a little deeper, shedding light on these stories of long ago and closing with a prayer. As a reader, I thought this was a great opportunity to not only re-read the Gospel stories, but learn more about the times of Jesus and use the prayer as a way to reflect the true meaning of each story.
The 40-day format is ideal for Lent: 40 stories for 40 days. If you don’t want to read this book for Lent buy it anyway for a lovely “retreat with Jesus.” You will be glad you did.
