O Antiphons? O God Help Us!

O Antiphons? O God Help Us!

I planned to write this blog post about the O Antiphons that we pray in the liturgy from December 17th through the 23rd. But as I’m writing this on Friday the 14th, I’m watching the coverage of the horrific school massacre in Connecticut. The situation is too horrible to imagine. How can this happen? How can the safety of a small town elementary school be so shattered by violence?

Here in the peaceful and hopeful season of Advent we see the terrible things human beings are capable of. I have no words of wisdom in the face of this kind of evil. But I know that the ultimate answer—and the only possible hope—lies in the Savior whose birth we await.

The O Antiphon for today is:

O Wisdom, O holy Word of God, you govern all creation with your strong yet tender care. Come and show your people the way to salvation.

How we need that strong and tender care in the face of such pain. God help us!
