Every now and then I pick up a book and find that it touches my heart and awakens my senses. Teresa Tomeo and Cheryl Dickow have written such a book with Wrapped Up, God’s Ten Gifts for Women. Drawing on both wisdom of Scripture and modern culture, Wrapped Up will help you recognize the gifts that God has given women such as love, forgiveness and a joyful attitude.
While reading this book I sometimes felt slapped in the face with the realities the book brought to life. Wrapped Up has 10 chapters of gifts; my favorite gift is a joyful attitude.
I like to think I am a joyful person. I am normally the person who finds the silver lining in every cloud or sees the glass as half full–not half empty. Lately though, I have to admit I haven’t been so joyful. I have allowed my busy and sometimes stressful life to interrupt my joy. I seem to be a little more cynical and probably even a little cranky. Wow, I thought while reading this chapter, I miss my joy.
The chapter on joyful attitude talks about a little boy named Jordon joyfully skipping. The adults watching Jordon skipping had to smile too. Because of Jordon’s joy, they also were joyful! The author (and Jordon’s mother) of this chapter, Cheryl Dickow, discovered that when she skipped, it brought her joy too!
One afternoon I found myself tired and cranky. I thought, You have got to pull yourself out of this. So you guessed it, I skipped down the hall at work while no one was watching, and I did feel better! Truth be told I was so bad at skipping I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at myself! I was thankful no one saw me, but I knew if they did they would have laughed with me and maybe a little bit at me. As Wrapped Up states “Our joyful attitude has rippling, positive effects, it’s a gift we are able to receive and to give quite freely.”
The joy of the Lord is my strength – Nehemiah 8:10
Skipping may not be my first choice for finding joy, but after reading Wrapped Up I recognize that my lack of joy not only affects me it also affects others. God is with us in all things, including the gifts he gives to each of us. A joyful attitude is my way of sharing God’s joy to others. Thank you, Teresa Tomeo and Cheryl Dickow, for slapping me in the face with God’s love and joy in your book, Wrapped Up!
