Tiger Mania

Tiger Mania

I have to admit I am a huge baseball fan. Or to be more accurate, a Detroit Tigers fan. Or to be slightly more accurate, a Tigers maniac. As I’m writing this blog post the Tigers are chasing the Chicago White Sox, one game out of first place. Everybody around me is turning his or her attention to football but I am stuck on baseball. When I thought about a topic for this blog the only thing on my mind was the pennant race. So here it is, my ode to baseball.

There are many fine spiritual lessons to be learned as a Tigers fan:

  • I’m sure you all know that God is a baseball fan. The first four words of the bible establish that fact: (In the “big inning”…).
  • Baseball inspires fervent prayer. (Oh God, don’t let him strike out!)
  • All too often, being a Tigers fan inspires great humility. (Final score: 10-2.)
  • Then there is the hope that bursts to life every February when spring training gets underway. (This will definitely be the Tigers’ year!)
  • Finally, baseball inspires patience and Christian charity. (My boss is a dreaded Yankees fan. Enough said!)

In six short days the Tigers will either be heading to the post season or heading home for the off season. One way or the other I will adjust and move on to other important things—like Michigan football.

I suppose there are many more important and more spiritual things to be thinking about in these serious times. The news is full of political and international news that is of great concern to all people of good will. In the midst of this, there’s nothing like a little baseball to refresh the mind and heart.

What helps you escape a little from your stressful life? What turns you into an outright and irrational fan?
