One thing I can’t resist is presents. I love to give them and to receive them. If they are wrapped up in pretty paper with a big bow, all the better. That’s why I’m so excited about this new book, Wrapped Up: God’s Ten Gifts for Women by Teresa Tomeo and Cheryl Dickow. What better gifts to unwrap than gifts sent from God?
What are these gifts? The authors focus on ten: God’s love, God’s forgiveness, allowing God to be God, a joyful attitude, suffering, letting go, a sacramental life, sisters in faith, setting priorities, and the gift of you! As I look at this life I wonder, what about peace and love? What about being healed? What’s this about suffering and letting go? Why are these on the top-ten list of gifts?
Of course the answer is clear: God blesses us by teaching us to live according to his ways, to his priorities. The peace and healing I seek are contained in these other gifts, if I open my eyes to see them and my heart to receive them.
Wrapped Up combines the stories of faith found in Scripture with lessons taken from our modern media-driven culture. The result is being grounded in timeless truths as we wrestle with timely realities faced in everyday life. What a blessed combination!
The demands on women today tear us in many different directions. We are taught to “have it all” and we expend a lot of frustrated energy to get there. This book is an antidote to the thrashing about we so often engage in as we try to take what we want. This book lets us receive what God wants to give. I’m excited to open these gifts. It’s better than Christmas!
