Many Parts, One Body

Many Parts, One Body

For the past few days, I have been making my way around the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress in Anaheim, California. It is my first time here, and to say that it is an amazing experience is an understatement. Catholics from different countries. Catholics from 48 of the 50 U.S. states. (One of the organizers jokingly wouldn’t tell us the two states that failed to provide congress participants.) Masses in the custom of various ethnicities. Speakers on a range of topics that go on and on.

In my job as an assistant editor and now managing editor of St. Anthony Messenger magazine, I have covered stories of Catholics across the United States. I have covered Pope Benedict XVI’s papal visit to the United States. But this somehow feels different.

Thanks to the sex-abuse crisis and many other issues, there seems to have been a growing divide within our Church. This Congress has restored my faith that we are many parts, but truly one body. For this Catholic it is just the right message, at just the right time.
