The Servant team covered some ground this summer! The last week in July, Louise Paré drove from her home in Michigan to Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, for the Defending the Faith conference. This was an excellent opportunity to connect with some of our key authors. Right on the heels of that, I drove with Donna-Marie Cooper O’Boyle from Connecticut to King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, for the Catholic Marketing Network convention, where I met up with Louise. We had a whirlwind week walking the floor, networking with bookstore owners and colleagues in the publishing industry, and meeting with authors.
Donna-Marie (author of The Domestic Church and the upcoming Embracing Motherhood) and I gave a joint talk for the Catholic Writers Guild, which was held concurrently with CMN. Our topic was self-promotion with humility, and we had a lively audience with lots of questions. We ended our presentation with three key affirmations for Catholic self-promotion:
—My primary motivation is to serve others.
—I serve others best when I give them an accurate picture of what I can offer them.
—My abilities, gifts and products are valuable resources that God has given me to further his kingdom.
I was also able to listen to “book pitches” from aspiring authors, who each had seven minutes to present their proposal—very challenging for both author and publisher! This was the third year I participated in this and I was impressed by the professionalism and creativity shared by these writers.
The conference season is pretty much over—but I’m already looking forward to the next “road trip”!
