John Paul II, I’m a Better Catholic Because of You!

Santo Subito!

I was so happy to learn that a beatification date was set for John Paul II last Friday! During my college years I had a reawakening of my Catholic faith and John Paul II’s incredible papacy was a huge part of that. (You can read more about the beatification announcement here.)

One of the things that stuck with me about JPII was his intense love of the Blessed Mother. I remember reading that when his earthy mother died, he trustingly told Mary, “You will be my mother now.” Later in his life when he was shot during the infamous attack on his life, he uttered, “O Mary, my mother!” after the bullet pierced his stomach. He credited the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima for saving his life. The beautiful and trusting way in which he clung to Our Lady helped me grow in my own personal love and appreciation of Mary. I now turn to her with a childlike love and trust that I don’t think would be possible if it wasn’t for JPII’s example.

I credit a huge part of my devotion to the Blessed Mother to this phenomenal pope. John Paul II, I’m a better Catholic because of you!

Very nice, Lindsey! An aside, if I’m not mistaken- the bullet the pierced JPII is now in the crown of Our Lady’s statue in Fatima. Ironically, shortly before I logged onto Facebook and saw that this posting was up on AmericanCatholic.org, I was at a Novena Mass of the Miraculous Medal this evening, and during that Mass, the Mass offered by JPII in the 90s in NYC’s Central Park entered my mind- I literally flashed back to that day- when, as a young Catholic Boy Scout, I was holding a papal umbrella over a priest ministering Communion during that beautiful liturgy. Then, I come home, see this post, and the rest history. I’ve also been praying to JPII hoping that my the restoration of my eye(s) to full health can be counted as one of his miracles. My doctor seemed a bit skeptical, and I’d love to glorify God with my eyes, and by the intercession of John Paul the Great & Mary- our Blessed Mother.

Thank you so much, Steve! I really enjoyed reading your comment! Thanks for reminding me about the bullet in the crown in Our Lady’s statue in Fatima. I do remember that now. I pray that your eyes get restored. How amazing if that became an approved JPII miracle! The turn of events in your day is a reminder that with God, there are no coincidences! :)
