It Was Awesome, Baby!

It Was Awesome, Baby!

In one of my previous posts I talked about many of the fun adventures I’ve had writing stories for St.  Anthony Messenger. Well, just the other week I had another one. I got to interview Dick Vitale. As a sports fanatic, it was a dream come true. For those of you who don’t follow college basketball, Vitale is an iconic former coach turned announcer for ESPN. He is as well known for his many catchphrases, such as the title of this blog, as he is for his basketball knowledge.

And, while getting the interview was a real thrill, I always worry before any high profile interview if my expectations will leave me disappointed. Let me tell you, they were not. Vitale is every bit as genuine and likeable as he seems. I was captivated by his stories, his faith, his enthusiasm for the game to which he has devoted over 50 years of his life.

I’m currently working on a profile that will be featured in the March issue of the magazine–yes, we work that far ahead. It’s one of those articles that kind of writes itself, but also leaves you wishing you could make the article just a little bit longer so you could include one more story, one more quote. Trust me, Dickie V is a treasure trove of both.
